ISO and GHG Protocol Announce Partnership to Strengthen Global GHG Accounting

ISO and the GHG Protocol formally announced partnership to harmonise and co-develop greenhouse gas accounting and reporting standards. This alliance is designed to reduce fragmentation in the global GHG landscape by forging a unified, co-branded standard suite that brings together the strengths of both organisations.

ISO and GHGP announced that they will develop one joint, harmonised set of standards for GHG emissions terminology, measurement, and reporting data. The organisations aim to develop a common global language for emissions accounting, which, according to ISO, will “significantly reduce reporting burden for users and accelerate progress towards decarbonisation – responding to calls for harmonisation by both government and business.”

The ISO–GHGP collaboration includes standards from the ISO 1406X family, alongside the GHGP Corporate Accounting and Reporting, Scope 2 and Scope 3 Standards. In addition, the organisations will work on a joint Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) standard – reflecting the increase in companies seeking more granular data from across their value chains to guide decarbonisation decisions, and supporting the development of globally aligned Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms.

The ISO 1406X family of standards is used by governments in legislation and regulation and forms the foundation for GHG reporting and verification frameworks in many industries. GHG Protocol standards are used by 9 out of 10 Fortune 500 companies and relied upon by leading sustainability and disclosure initiatives, including the EU CSRD, IFRS/ISSB, US SEC, and GRI.
