REGOs, RGGOs, and beyond: proving origin and impact.

After another unprecedently hot and dry summer across Europe the urgency of tackling climate change by transitioning to renewable energy is greater than ever. Energy attribute certificates (EACs), like the UK’s REGOs and RGGOs, can play a vital role in driving markets towards renewables.

But the role of such market instruments is far from guaranteed in a future where energy systems become ever more digital, granular and interconnected. How could, or should, these certificates evolve to secure their place in a changing and uncertain world?

At the RECS National GO Day – UK, speakers and delegates will examine the effect of EACs expanding beyond electricity to increasingly cover gases, hydrogen, and sustainable fuels. We will also explore why some actors want to see EACs evolve from a relatively simple instrument for fuel mix disclosure and proving the origin of procured energy into a broader tool for supporting credible energy use claims, evidencing emissions reductions, and rewarding system outcomes. We will ask what effects these developments could have on renewables markets based on contractual instruments and whether such pressure could be a blessing or a curse.
