ISO and GHGP announce co-development of harmonised standards

ISO and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) have announced a landmark partnership to harmonise their existing portfolios of greenhouse gas (GHG) standards and to co-develop new standards for GHG emissions accounting and reporting. This agreement marks a major milestone in climate standardisation efforts.

Under the agreement, ISO and GHGP will leverage their leading voluntary GHG standards to deliver one harmonised set of co-branded international standards.

This includes the ISO 1406X family of standards, alongside the GHGP Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, Scope 2 Standard, Scope 3 Standard, and Product Life Cycle Standard. The existing standards of both organisations will remain in effect until the new standards are published, after which they will be withdrawn.

In addition, the organisations will work on a joint Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) standard. According to ISO’s press release, this reflects “the increase in companies seeking to access more granular data from across their value chain to guide decarbonisation decisions, and supports the development of globally aligned Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms.”

By combining the ISO 1406X family with the GHGP standards into one set, the partnership aims to “enable integration, producing a set of standards with rigorous verification methods and comprehensive scope and applicability, leveraging the combined strength of GHGP and ISO to advance the potential for legislative uptake of one set of harmonised standards.”

The partnership is expected to deliver technical rigour, policy relevance, and practical usability in a single set of standards. It allows both organisations to draw on their collective reach and credibility to accelerate global adoption and drive meaningful emissions reductions.
